BIRDING TIPS:

COMMENTS:  The Green Heron is the second smallest in the Heron group.  The smallest of the Heron group is the Least Bittern.

MIGRATION:  The Green Heron generally migrates through Maricopa County during the fall and winter months;  prefers trees and vegetation around ponds, streams, and marshes.

COLOR:

  • ADULT–  Head: Dark Greenish/Black;

  • Neck: Rufous/Rusty color;

  • Chest:  Rufous/White streaked; Stomach: Grey;  Back-Wings:

Dark Greenish/Black with Greenish Yellow feather edges; Legs:  Non-Breeding condition: Dark Yellow; Breeding condition:  Deep Orange/Reddish;  JUVENILE: Head-Blackish cap;  Neck and Underparts:  White with Rufous striping;  Back and Wings: Greenish Black with rusty yellow feather edges;  Legs: Yellow/Light Greenish Note: The Juvenile feather color will change as the bird matures.  Refer to the photos supporting this edition.  Click on the bird index bar for the Green Heron and the group photos will appear.
