What to Wear for Family Photos in Bismarck, ND.

Family Photo tips

Because what you wear really does matter (and no, it doesn’t have to be stressful)

I get this question all the time — “What should we wear for our family photo session?” And I get it! Choosing outfits can feel like a lot of pressure, especially when you want everyone to look good and feel like themselves.

Whether we’re meeting at one of Bismarck’s gorgeous parks or cozying up for an in-home session, here’s everything you need to know to feel confident about your outfit choices.

1. Start with a color palette — not matching outfits

Gone are the days of everyone wearing white shirts and jeans (I promise). Instead, think coordinated, not matching. Pick 2–3 base colors and add in a few complementary tones. Neutrals always photograph beautifully — think creams, browns, soft blues, dusty pinks, or sage greens. From there, mix in some texture and layers to give your photos dimension and life.

2. Dress for the setting and the season

Bismarck has such a wide range of backdrops — golden fields, river trails, cozy homes, and even snowy winter wonderlands. If we’re doing an outdoor session, keep the location and the season in mind.

Fall photos: think layers — cardigans, boots, cozy knits.

Summer sessions: breathable fabrics like linen and cotton are your best friend.

Winter shoots: lean into it! Bundled-up looks, scarves, and even playful touches like pom hats can make your photos feel warm and real.

In-home sessions: go comfy and casual — relaxed looks are always a win.

3. Keep comfort in mind — especially for the kids

If your little one hates that itchy sweater or stiff shoes, it’s going to show. Make sure everyone is wearing something they can move and play in. We’ll be running, cuddling, and getting a little silly — so flexible, cozy clothes are key. Bonus: it helps keep moods high and meltdowns low.

4. Patterns + prints — in moderation

A small floral print? Yes. Tiny polka dots? Sure! But when everyone wears loud prints or clashing patterns, the focus can shift away from your faces and your connection. Keep it balanced — maybe one or two people in the group wear a pattern, and the rest stick to solids or subtle textures.

5. Don’t forget the shoes

This one’s easy to overlook, but shoes can really complete (or distract from) a look. Avoid bright white sneakers or neon colors. Go with something simple, neutral.

6. Accessories: the final touch

Accessories can add interest and personality — think hats, scarves, hair bows, or a special blanket to snuggle in. Just make sure they don’t overpower the moment. Keep it simple and true to you.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, your family photos are about you — the hugs, the laughter, the connection. Outfits are just the supporting cast. Choose pieces that make you feel good and reflect your family’s personality. When you do that, the photos feel more like you, and that’s where the magic really happens.
