BIRDING TIPS

-The American Avocet is one of my favorite birds. It is an attractive shore bird with long leg’s and long thin upturned bill.

-The Avocet generally migrates through Maricopa County during the fall and winter months

COLOR: The Adult non-breeding and immature Avocet: neck, chest and stomach are basically white,    the wings are black with a strip of white feathers toward the middle of the wings, legs are bluish grey….. Breeding Adult:  During breeding season the avocet neck – head feathers will be a rusty-tan color.  Suggestion: Refer to the photos located in the “Outdoor Photography” section of the website.  Study both the of the Avocets in breeding condition and non-breeding condition. We think you will find the different color patterns interesting.

MALE VS FEMALE:  The Avocet is difficult to determine the sex…. Comparing the male and female side-by-side the female bill is shorter and more up-turned

DIET:  The Avocet will forge for aquatic plants and invertebrates in shallow waters.

Hope the birding tips have been helpful.
